Fotos Thanks With a mariachi launch, Austin notables mingling and an overall festive feel in the MACC's lower gallery, Latinitas annual Fotos de Alma charity auction and exhibit doubled its yield from last year thanks to the lovely in-kind donations of photographers, merchants and food services who donated time and goodies to aiding young Latinas in success. We'd like to especialy thank this year's featured guest: internationally- acclaimed photojournalist Donna DeCesare and the others who donated obras de arte including Anna Photography, Celeste Casas, Rebecca Davis, Frank Cammarata, Roberto (Bear) Guerra, Marcela Gonzalez, Yadira Ibarra, Alberto Jimenez, Jorge San Hueza-Lyon, Maria Madrigal, Alison de Maintenon, Brooke Marroquin, Lesley Nowlin, Fern Ramirez, Sarah K. Rodriguez, Isabel Salazar, Christina Velasquez, Cheryl Wilson and Matthew Young. We were also grateful to new Mayor Lee Leffinwell for his support in securing the MACC for the event, Sen. Gonzalo Barrientos for his honorary chairmanship and for donating a lunch with a winning guest, along with Chief Art Acevedo and Rep. Diana Maldonado of Round Rock. Food Sponsors Brown Distributing, Rios Brazilian and IKEA (yes, they have cookies!) fed a dense crowd of supporters and others such as the Omni Hotel Downtown Austin, Bradz Salon, Edelweiss Salon, Shag Salon, Costco, Express Alterations, Magnolia Cafe and Wal-Mart provided lovely raffle items. Another thanks to IKEA for contributing lovely frames. What an outpouring of local and regional support for Latinitas! Fashion Show Dazzles Over 200 guests joined Latinitas' program participants for a celebration of Latina accomplishment and beauty. Emulating contemporary and past heroines such as art icon Frida Kahlo, Argentina's most famous first lady Eva Peron, United Farm Workers co-founder Dolores Huerta, celebrity icon and activist Salma Hayak and music sensation Celia Cruz, girls and teens in Latinitas' elementary, middle and high school programs owned the catwalk at the Mexican American Cultural Center for the Latina Icons Fashion Show. Held on Friday, May 8th, girls created multi-media and graphic design projects to present their "icon" and then thanks to clothing donations from Buffalo Exchange, El Interior and volunteers and make-up and hair by Matadora Cosmetics, girls looked the part! Latinitas thanks Fuerza Latina dance troope for kicking off the evening with a salsa performance and Zappinatra for their live music. Havana Restaurant, Corazon, Cafe Serrano and IKEA donated cakes, chips and snacks; Cantina Laredo, The Spa at Plaza Cortez, Mi Casa and Nora Mendoza Jewelry for donated lovely Mother's Day items as door prizes. Latinitas program leader Vianey Luna got this message following the show from one of the models representing Martin Middle School, who dressed as Salma Hayak. "Hey miss, its me victoria.
