Volunteer Opportunities – Austin

Latinitas Summer Camp Volunteers

Girls ages 9-14 with a desire to innovate and express themselves in fun, creative ways through media and technology are invited to join Latinitas Summer Camp to learn about filmmaking, types of technology, cultural arts, health and wellness and more – all while making friends and meeting interesting, inspiring mentors from a variety of backgrounds.

We are seeking outgoing volunteers, ages 16 and older, to provide assistance, support, and guidance to our summer camp participants. Summer camps will be Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 4:00pm during the month of July. 3-4 volunteers needed per morning and afternoon shift.

Summer Camp Schedules:

  • July 8-12: Cine Chica Camp
  • July 15-19: Design Chica Camp
  • July 22-26: Power Chica Camp
  • July 29-Aug 2: Healthy Chica Camp

Tech Chicos Volunteers

The Ruiz Branch of the Austin Public Library and Latinitas are providing a week of technology-based learning and fun for boys and girls between 9 – 14 years old. Explore storytelling through a variety of technology and design activities such as virtual reality, video game & app design, wearable technology with 3D printing and other technology-focused group activities!

We are seeking volunteers to provide assistance, support, and guidance to our participants and assist the curriculum facilitator with additional tasks and general event logistics. This program will be June 24 through June 28 from 9:00AM to 1:00PM. 2-3 volunteers needed per day.

College Chica Volunteers

In partnership with the University of Texas’ computer science department, Latinitas will provide a 3 day computer science camp where girls, ages 9-14, get an overview of the department, complete a coding project, visit classes, talk intimately with professors, explore the department’s new innovations/technologies and learn about all the options of a computer science major.

We are seeking outgoing volunteers to provide assistance, support, and guidance to our participants. You will also assist with general event assistance such as passing out materials, checking in participants, and additional tasks assigned by curriculum leads. This camp will be June 24 through June 26 from 10:00AM to 3:00PM. 4-5 volunteers needed per day.

Code Chica Volunteers

Girls in 8th and 12th grade will gain knowledge about HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create their own website. This program is FREE, and upon completion of the program, students will receive a $75 stipend and a certificate outlining their accomplishments.

We are looking for both men and women to participate as coding instructors, guest speakers, and curriculum liaisons for our Cohort 2. Basic experience with HTML, CSS and Javascript is required. Advanced experience encouraged. As a volunteer,  you will work directly with students to help problem solve, provide guidance, and assist in helping facilitate the lessons. Cohort 2 will be July 22 through July 26 from 10:00AM to 2:00PM. 5-6 volunteers needed per day.

Club Latinitas Volunteers Fall 2019

Club Latinitas is a space where Latina youth, and girls of all backgrounds, come together and express themselves through multimedia projects. Club Latinitas, our longest-running program, takes place at select elementary and middle schools in the Austin Independent School District (AISD) and welcomes all girls in grades 3rd – 8th.

This program focuses on encouraging youth to build confidence, courage, and leadership skills through media and technology training. We are seeking enthusiastic volunteers that can dedicate at least one afternoon per week for the spring 2019 semester to meet with a club from February – May. Students and individuals interested in youth empowerment, media, tech, cultural and media literacy, and mentoring are encouraged to apply!

Special Events & Tabling

Connecting with the community and the families we serve is valuable. We attend community events, art festivals, resource fairs, and more to provide additional information about Latinitas such as upcoming programs and volunteer opportunities. We seek volunteers that can manage our booth or information table at such events, and hand our flyers, monitor sign-up sheets, and connect with students, families, and professionals.

Prior to attending an event, volunteers will be provided with specific event details, expectations, and requirements

Professional Assistance

Latinitas welcomes professionals experienced in graphic design, web design, social media, translation (English/Spanish), photoshop, marketing, and finance to provide insight and knowledge. If interested in providing your expertise and applying your skills, please send your availability and profession to volunteeratx@latinitasmagazine.org.
