Q: What inspired you to get into politics?
A: I have always been in politics since I was a kid. If you want to make a difference, you get involved.
Q: What did you have to do to get where you are today? In terms of education, jobs, that lead here, steps that lead here, steps that needed to be taken or detours that happened in life?
A: I started off different from most. It took me 13 years to get my bachelors degree from the University of Texas at El Paso. I worked as a city clerk. Once I had my education, I realized I can do more. I got promoted to department head and worked for the city. I opened up my own small business. Later on, I got a phone call from someone and they asked me if I was going to run for office. At the time, there wasn’t anything open, so I told them if a city council position opened up I would. When a position opened up they called me and said they were ready to help me get into office.
Q: What is the job description of being a representative entitle?
A: Policy maker. I make decisions that effect mydistrict.
Q: What is your favorite part of your career? What do you like the most about it?
A: Meeting people and making a difference.
Q: What have been your biggest accomplishments?
A: A lot of things, I can’t really say. Getting an education and being the first in my family to get a college degree. I encourage others to get educated. Your education can’t be taken away. It’s not always easy, but it is worth it.
Q: What advice do you have for Latinas that are interested in pursuing a career in politics?
A: Always strive to do good in school, stay focused, get involved and learn what it takes.
Q: What message would you like to send to young Latinas?
A: Stay in control of your life. Don’t let a man control you. Stay focused and be independent.
Q: What advancements have you made for your city?
A: I increased the size of the utilities board, public service board. I changed the way people get into the board. It is now open to the community. Now there are two new people on the board that did not get on the typical way. I also did the standing for car insurance it is uniformed you must have insurance and abide by all laws.
Q: Who is your role model?
A: My parents; my father was involved in politics. And my mother stressed the importance of education. Also my good friend Ketha Fierro, she never says anything bad, and she is in politics as well.
Q: How do you feel about young Latinas looking up to you as a role model?
A: Honored, I try to set a good example.
Q: Do you feel you have reaches all your goals?
A: No, one should always have goals, learn everyday. My upcoming goals are to do the doctoral program in public policy.
Q: What is your next step in life?
A: In the next three years, I would like to get my PHD through night classes and run for higher office.
Q: What kind of hobbies do you have?
A: Reading and go shopping. Researching my family is my new hobby to find new things about my family, also blog.
